The reburial of 84 people exhumed last week is underway at the Sekuruwe cemetery outside Mokopane in Limpopo. Anglo Platinum exhumed the bodies to enable it to extend its operations on communal land.
The community is against the reburial and has accused Anglo Platinum of negotiating in bad faith. Seven people were arrested during skirmishes between the community and police at the graveyard this morning.
Meanwhile at the burial site, there was no funeral programme, no prayers and no hymns sung -- only shovels and graders could be heard. Three graders re-dug the graves covered with soil by the protesters on Sunday. One of the residents says seven of the bodies are those of his family.
Police had to fire rubber bullets when protesters stoned the funeral undertaker’s vehicle. The crowd scattered and 47 were arrested for inciting violence and damage to property.
