The Limpopo Housing Department and a farmer have handed over 125 low cost houses to farm workers outside Louis Trichardt in the Makhado Municipality. Citrus fruit farmer Carl Henning spent about R700 000 to build houses for the workers, including those who have retired.
The People's Housing Programme is part of government's campaign to provide houses for farm workers. The department subsidised 118 houses. Henning says he paid for the other seven houses.
In a statement last year, the department said it plans to spend over R2.5 billion in the coming three years in the province to create homes for families in sustainable communities.
