Two people were killed and more than 50 injured in Alexandra
|
May 13, 2008, 12:30
Police and the Human Rights Commission are considering transporting back displaced foreigners in Alexandra to their home countries. They are locked in a meeting on how to deal with the foreigners who are being driven out by some residents of the township.
At least three foreigners have been killed and many assaulted during the violence in the township. People went about their business as usual in Alexandra today, seemingly unaware of the xenophobic violence which erupted in the sprawling township on Sunday night. Dozens have been detained on charges ranging from public violence to robbery.
One Alexandra resident, who did not want to be named, said they will continue with the violence as they want to get rid of all the foreigners. "These people take our houses and jobs, we do not want these people here".
Meanwhile Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says the attacks on foreigners are regrettable. She says preparations are underway to hold a national indaba to deal with the issue. However she could not give dates of the proposed indaba as the matter still has to go to cabinet.
