Parliament adopts ‘no confidence report’

May 13, 2008, 11:30

Parliament's Communications Committee has adopted a report which calls for a vote of no confidence in the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Board.

The report follows concerns by members about developments at the SABC, and in particular a memorandum by Board Chairperson Kanyisile Mkhonza that was leaked to the Sunday Times, containing serious allegations against Group CEO Dali Mpofu.

Mpofu has since been suspended by the board, shortly after he suspended news head Snuki Zikalala. However Mpofu said it contained inaccurate and potentially defamatory allegations against him. Mkhonza said a team was investigating who leaked the memorandum.

ANC members of the Committee said it was unacceptable that the differences between Board and Management had not been resolved, adding that the Board was not in a position to execute its responsibilities effectively.

The report calling for a vote of no confidence in the board was adopted after the DA voted against it. It will now be debated in the National Assembly later this month.
