A fire has broken out at Tongaat-Hulett's sugar factory in Durban engulfing three of the sugar storage tanks. The eThekwini Metro fire department says the fire started after an explosion in one of the storage tanks.

The storage tanks are said to have sustained extensive damage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Fire officials battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control.

It is unclear if production was affected by the blaze. Tongaat-Hulett management has not officially commented yet.
