New R5 coin to honour Madiba

Former President Nelson Mandela

Mandela will turn 90 on July 18

April 17, 2008, 13:45

A R5 coin to be issued this year will honour former President Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, which is on July 18. Cabinet has announced that it approved the design change for the 2008 R5 coin at its meeting yesterday.

The major international 90th birthday event - the latest 46664 concert - will be held at Hyde Park in London on June 27, while the annual 46664 World Aids Day concert will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 29 November. Will Smith is tapped to host the celebration, and confirmed performers include Stevie wonder, Annie Lennox, Razorlight and Keane.

U2, the Spice Girls and Sir Paul McCartney could join them as well as Eminem. Should Eminem agree to perform it would be his first major concert appearance since his self-imposed retirement in 2005. However, on his birthday, Madiba will be with his family at his home in Qunu, Eastern Cape, to celebrate privately.

The event is expected to draw a crowd of 45 000 music fans, and special guests will include Princes William and Harry, former US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, who is currently running to become the next President.

The concert will come 20 years after the "Free Mandela" concert at London's Wembley Stadium. - edited by Tanja Bencun
