Companies have been involved in acts of price-fixing in the bread and dairy sectors
|
April 17, 2008, 13:00
Cabinet says it is still premature for government to consider introducing a new legislation that will criminalise price-fixing. This as more evidence emerges that company executives have been involved in acts of price-fixing in the bread and dairy sectors.
Rising food and energy prices are causing concern worldwide. The Competition Commission has been applauded for exposing companies engaged in price-fixing. However government spokesperson Themba Maseko says they will only consider criminalising the practice, if the situation gets out of hand.
Meanwhile the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) is to lead a march in central Johannesburg this afternoon to protest against rising food and energy prices. It is due to begin at the Johannesburg City Hall shortly, and proceed to local Eskom offices and a Pick 'n Pay store, both in Braamfontein.
