The Land Bank has suspended chief financial officer Xolile Ncame for alleged incompetence which has caused the bank to lose more than R1 billion, City Press website reported today.
Ncame's suspension has been kept secret and only a handful of officials and board members were aware of it. Staff who reported to him were told he was on leave.
The newspaper said Ncame was told of the decision to suspend him at a meeting with the bank's acting chief executive, Saki Zamxaka, on March 3. Herman Moeketsi, the bank's spokesman, told the newspaper that Ncame was on leave but could not say when he would return to work.
Ncame confirmed his suspension today, "I might have to approach the Labour Court to force them to give me the reasons for this illegal suspension," he said.
He told City Press that his suspension was linked to a letter he had written to the acting chief executive and external auditors, expressing his views on matters that were "problematic to the sustainability" of the bank. - Sapa
