Tshwane Executive Mayor Gwen Ramokgopa says their public works and infrastructure development team is working closely with all levels of government and the private sector to increase delivery of non-conventional sources of energy to more households throughout the city.
Ramokgopa says the city will be piloting alternative energy systems as part of its strategy to reduce the load on the electricity capacity of the city.
Ramokgopa says plans include a gas cylinder plant in Atteridgeville, solar water heaters across the city, solar street lights in Soshanguve and solar traffic lights. Ramokgopa says they have introduced their own energy saving and usage programme, which has to date enabled the City of Tshwane to use 10% less energy through being more efficient, and reducing wastage.
She says to this end, they have a forum with business to discuss saving by shifting their production to off-peak periods. Ramokgopa says the city has issued 15 energy saving tips to residents through the media. She says all municipal buildings' lights are switched off at 8pm.
