Radebe launches annual Arrive Alive campaign

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe

Radebe launched a road safety initiative today

March 13, 2008, 17:15

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has launched the National Arrive Alive campaign at Boyne in Limpopo today.

This year's theme is: "Be part of the solution: road safety begins with you". The Transport Department will be focusing on driver behaviour, vehicle fitness, driver fitness, drunken driving and pedestrian safety.

Last December, 1 419 people died on South African roads, and during last year's Easter weekend 181. In both cases figures were slightly lower than before. In 2006, 7 000 pedestrians were killed on South Africa's roads.

The Minister also responded to accusations that the energy crisis is worsened because coal trucks are slowed down by bad roads, farmers struggle to transport their produce to cold rooms, national and international markets, and the most important highway, the N1 from Cape Town to Musina, is in a shocking state despite the high toll revenue.
