Residents of areas south of Durban are still recovering from severe floods that hit the area on Tuesday. The floods followed heavy downpours where up to 200mm of rain fell in some parts of the province.
Merebank, in the Durban South basin and Umlazi were some of the worst affected areas. The roads were badly flooded, leaving several cars submerged.
In Merebank the heavy rains caused a storm water drain to burst, releasing water into hundreds of homes. Emergency workers say the place was completely submerged and officials say the estimate cost of damages could run into the millions.
Rains also flooded the out-patients department, pharmacy and the surgical stores at Prince Mshiyeni hospital at Umlazi. Patients were housed at a shelter for a few hiurs, while the flooded areas were being cleared.
Other areas affected include Chatsworth, Pinetown, Isipingo, Yellowwood Park, Amanzimtoti, Prospecton and Durban North.
