Durban roads, train services affected by floods

Floody conditions in Durban

Floody conditions in Durban

March 12, 2008, 17:30

The south of Durban was badly flooded after last night's heavy rains. Train services and roads were severely affected.

Police and emergency workers rescued a number of people after water levels rose during a heavy downpour. The weather bureau says 200mm of rain fell in some parts of the province.

Several areas around Durban were hit hard by the flash floods. Merebank, in the Durban South basin, and Umlazi, were the worst affected. The roads were badly flooded, and several cars were submerged. Other roads were closed after mudslides.

Residents warn that if nothing is done about the drainage system in the area, the flooding will occur again. Train services around Durban were also severely affected by last night’s rains. Officials say cables were destroyed, and other train routes were flooded.
