'SA has enough water to sustain growing economy'

Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry
Lindiwe Hendricks

Hendricks says SA has water storage of 86%

March 11, 2008, 16:45

Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Lindiwe Hendricks says South Africa has enough water to support the country's growing economy. She says good rains over the past few years have ensured that water storage in the country is at 86%.

Hendricks made the statement in Parliament to allay fears that the country could be facing a water crisis, similar to the present electricity shortage. She has however admitted that, like in other areas of the economy, they are also struggling to recruit and retain properly qualified engineers.

She says in order to ensure that this does not lead to a crisis, several measures, including the establishment of a training academy in the department, have been put in place.
