Slovo residents will appeal the eviction ruling on Thursday

March 11, 2008, 05:30

Hundreds of residents of the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa met last night to discuss their eviction court ruling. Yesterday the Cape High Court ruled that the informal dwellers must move to make way for phase two of the N2 Gateway housing project.

The meeting was called to inform the community of the ruling and to tell the people to remain calm and follow advice from their lawyers. A community leader, Mzwanele Zulu, who is representing approximately 4 000 people in the informal settlement, says they discussed the judgement with their lawyers yesterday afternoon

The community will appeal the matter on Thursday in the Cape High Court before making any other plans. Judge President John Hlophe ruled in favour of the government and Thubelisha Homes ordering that the relocation must begin on Monday.
