Residents from an informal settlement in Emfuleni south of Johannesburg have blockaded a road because of "poor service delivery" by the municipality, Gauteng police said.
Police spokesperson Molefe Mokoena says about 100 residents used stones and wood to blockade the road to the Tshepo Themba high school. Emfuleni mayoral spokesperson man Quincy Kekana said the area was waterlogged and houses were flooded because of poor drainage.
He said the problem had been scheduled to be resolved in 2007, but the integrated development programme was delayed because of "issues pertaining to other matters". Kekana said the municipality had responded to the protest action and senior municipal officials had been to the area this morning.
Meanwhile police are still at the scene and the situation is under control. - Sapa
