Work to continue at historic Pretoria site

Tom Jenkins Drive in Tshwane

The Pretoria HIgh Court has dismissed an application by residents to stop work at a historical site

March 07, 2008, 18:45

Construction work on Tom Jenkins Drive in Tshwane is set to continue. The Pretoria High Court has dismissed an application by residents to stop work at the historic site.

Residents said it was a protected heritage area. But Public Works said the work was necessary to ensure public safety.

The quartzite rock faces on Meintjies Hill were sprayed with concrete to prevent rock falls. The department earlier denied that work on a new fence for the Presidency had caused damage to the rock face.

In handing down judgment, the court said it would be irresponsible to compromise human life for aesthetic value.
