KZN mourns loved ones killed on the roads

March 06, 2008, 11:45

Hundreds of people have converged at Curries Fountain in Durban for a provincial day of prayer following the deaths of 31 people on KwaZulu-Natal roads on Monday. Premier Sbu Ndebele is expected to deliver the keynote address later today.

Transport MEC Bheki Cele says the provincial government has declared today a day of mourning to enable religious leaders to console the bereaved families, who are still reeling in shock. He says the aftermath of Monday's tragic accidents can only be dealt with through spiritual intervention.

Meanwhile schools across KwaZulu-Natal observed a moment of silence during their assembly today. The principal at Comprehensive High School Roy Gasa described the escalation of accidents on the province's roads as shocking and attributed this to both negligence and speeding.
