March 06, 2008, 09:45
Ten of the 12 people who were killed yesterday in a bus accident near Nelspruit have already been identified by their families. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Abie Khoabane says the dead include seven men and five women.
Eleven people were killed on the scene while one died in hospital. Twelve other passengers were critically injured and more than 60 sustained minor injuries. The bus with more than 130 passengers was travelling from White River to Nelspruit when it lost control and overturned.
Khoabane says they have already opened a case of culpable homicide against the bus driver who survived the accident.
Prayer for accident victims
Meanwhile, scores of people from across KwaZulu-Natal are expected to attend a prayer meeting in Durban for the 33 who were killed in road accidents in the province this week. Premier Sbu Ndebele declared today a day of mourning after 31 people lost their lives in three accidents within a space of two hours.
Religious leaders are expected to join Ndebele and his cabinet for the interfaith prayers. Schools throughout the province are also expected to observe the day during special assemblies this morning.
