March held in support of mini-skirt assault victim

February 29, 2008, 17:00

A crowd of women, mainly wearing mini-skirts, has dispersed after holding a protest at the Noord street Taxi Rank in Johannesburg. The women were protesting against the stripping of another young woman recently by taxi drivers, who were apparently displeased by the way she was dressed.

National Deputy Secretary of the Top Six Taxi Association, Boyboy Mogorosi, says the association will have to mobilise all stakeholders in the taxi industry in order to uphold the rights of women. Mogorosi was speaking at the Noord taxi rank in Johannesburg today during the protest.

During the protest, some male taxi drivers also stripped naked.

"We need to engage the City of Johannesburg, engage the security company in the area, get more information why cameras are not working. Management… is playing hide and seek," says Mogorosi.

He also says that as an industry, it is important that they get a taxi academy because people need to be taught how to behave and how to treat customers.
