Veld fire breaks out near Cape Town city centre

February 23, 2008, 12:00

Firefighters are battling a veld fire that has broken out on the slopes of Signal Hill near Cape Town's Bo-Kaap area, outside the city centre.

Authorities say the strong southeasterly wind blowing across the Cape Peninsula is making it difficult to contain the blaze. There is no threat to life or property at this stage.

Six fire engines and a helicopter are being used to put out the flames.
