Death toll in Eastern Cape crash rises

The death toll in last night's motor accident on the road between Mthatha and Ngqeleni in the Eastern Cape has risen to six. Earlier, on it was reported that five people were killed instantly when a bakkie overturned.

A total of 10 people, among them a one-year-old baby boy are now in a serious condition in hospital. Traffic Safety spokesperson Tsepo Machaea says the boy's condition has been described as serious but stable. The injured have been admitted to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

Machaea says the driver of the bakkie has been arrested for driving without a valid driver's licence, and also faces charges of culpable homicide. The driver will appear in court on Monday.
