The N1 South highway outside Pretoria has been closed at the N4/Witbank interchange following a fatal car accident.
Metro Police spokesperson William Baloyi says the driver of a bakkie travelling north towards Polokwane lost control of the vehicle and crossed over the middle island into oncoming southbound traffic.
The bakkie's driver and an occupant of a car travelling in the opposite direction towards Johannesburg were killed instantly. Another two people have been seriously injured.
Baloyi says the highway will be re-opened as soon as police and emergency services personnel have cleared the accident scene.
Five killed in Eastern Cape accident
Meanwhile, five people have been killed and six seriously injured in an accident on the N2 road near Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape. An eyewitness says a bakkie overtook a truck and collided head-on with an oncoming car and five people died instantly.
The eyewitness says bad weather conditions could have contributed to the accident. Meanwhile, provincial Traffic Safety spokesperson, Tsepo Machaea, says the deceased are three children and two adults. The injured have been admitted to Madzikane ka-Zulu Memorial Hospital in Mt Frere.
