The number of deaths on South Africa's roads decreased by 217 between the 2006 festive season and the one just completed.
This is according to an official report released in Pretoria. Transport Minister Jeff Radebe says the number of fatalities between December 1 last year and January 6 this year was 1419, down from 1636 during the same period a year ago.
The number of fatalities decreased in seven of the nine provinces. Only the North West and the Northern Cape had more road deaths.
The report shows that speed played a major role in fatal crashes in most of the provinces, particularly in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and the Northern Cape.
