Hundreds of commuters have been left stranded at Pinetown outside Durban where two taxi associations are squaring up against each other over routes and fares.
The taxis, which operate along the Pinetown and Claremont routes, have been at loggerheads since this morning.
Police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge says they have deployed a heavy contingent of police officers to deal with the situation. The two associations are expected to hold a meeting later today. Mdunge says the two taxi associations had a feud over the use of a rank.
He says this morning the problem extended to the utilisation of the fare that is charged to commuters along the same routes travelling to Pinetown and Durban and vice versa.
One taxi association was charging R5 per person per passenger per trip. The other one was charging R6-50 for the same routes.
