Protesters attack bus in Wolmaranstad

January 07, 2008, 06:00

An angry mob of youths gathered on the N12 in Wolmaranstad in the North West late yesterday, breaking the window of a bus. At the time, the bus was carrying about 60 passengers and travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town.

The driver of the bus said he nearly lost control of the vehicle, but was grateful that none of his passengers were injured.

Earlier in the day, more than 3 000 Tswelelang township residents held a meeting where they complained about increasing water shortages.

Meanwhile, thousands of people in Lehurutshe and Itsoseng spent their festive season with little water. Residents are still relying on water tanks, which they say are not sufficient.

Communities battling with water shortages
These communities have been battling with water shortages for years. This is because underground water sources have dried up in many parts.

But the district municipality has promised to solve the problem. It has undertaken water projects worth R50 million. Plans for a reservoir, boreholes and pipelines are underway.
