An agriculture economist from the University of the Free State, Johan Willemse, says more price hikes for wheat products are in the pipeline for South Africans.
South Africa's production of wheat has decreased steadily over the years and currently wheat imports are the highest. Willemse has warned that government should give more attention to food security.
He says one of the main reasons for this is the worldwide trend of people migrating to cities and thus a greater demand for processed foods.
"Internationally wheat stocks continue to decline. It's the lowest in about 30 and 40 years. Our import infrastructure is creating problems and we are struggling to import the quantities that we need and that creates upward pressure on our domestic prices and we've seen that the price has increased a lot, and we expect more bread price increases to come," said Willemse.
