Park to use microchip to detect snakes’ movements

August 30, 2007, 21:00

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency has introduced a mamba micro-chipping project to study the snakes' movement from one area to another. Another aim is to detect when the mambas are visiting people's homes.

Game manager Chris Hobkirk said: "The chip gives the snakes individual… ID numbers, so we catch them. We give them a chip and we release them into the bush again. One day when we recapture that snake we will be able to scan it and pick up information on how far it has travelled… At the end of the day, we have to use that information to start making better decisions for the management of these high priority species."
