Tshwane ordered to stop road sign changes

August 28, 2007, 14:30

The Tshwane Metro Council has been ordered to stop the name change of road signs in Pretoria. The Pretoria High Court earlier granted the Freedom Front Plus and the civil rights group, AfriForum, an interim order against Pretoria's pending name change to Tshwane.

Judge Bill Prinsloo ruled that the applicants could suffer irreparable damage if the order was not granted. Prinsloo ordered the Tshwane Metro Council to stop the name change of road signs and says that this should be communicated to all provincial governments that the process has been prohibited by an interim court order.

The Metro Council has also been ordered to prepare an implementation plan to change the boards back to Pretoria. After drawing up the plan, the council will have three days to hand it over to the applicants.
