The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has called for the immediate reinstatement of 95 suspended Cape Town Metro Police officers. The officers brought peak hour traffic on the N2 to a virtual standstill yesterday morning.
They drove in a slow moving convoy to the civic centre in protest against the city's staff restructuring process. Samwu spokesperson, Andre Adams, says the suspensions are unlawful.
"We feel that the mayor is not telling the truth, when addressing this matter. She tries to create the impression that they are busy bargaining with the union which is basically untrue. That is why we have got three disputes currently pending at the bargaining council, which relates to their refusal to bargain and their bad faith bargaining. We have indicated that the stance that they have taken is going to lead to frustration among members," Adams said.
