Mkhabela Sibeko, the acting Ekurhuleni metro police chief, has confirmed that Robert McBride, the embattled police chief, is on paid leave. This comes after uncertainty about the status of McBride's absence from work.
On Saturday, Duma Nkosi, the Ekurhuleni mayor, told a news conference that McBride would be given "time off" pending the outcome of a court case against him. However, Nkosi would not be drawn into explaining whether McBride would be suspended or be given paid or unpaid leave.
On Friday, the South African Municipal Workers Union threatened to go on strike if the municipality failed to suspend McBride.
