June 23, 2007, 11:45

Four people died and 41 others were seriously injured when two trucks and a bakkie collided in Blinkpan outside Witbank, Mpumalanga police said today.

Leonard Hlathi, a police spokesperson and captain, said three people died on impact, while the fourth one died on arrival at the Cosmos Hospital in Witbank yesterday morning.

"The Nissan truck driver said he had decided to park his vehicle on the side of the road because the mist was blurring his view, but when he tried to park, a Dyna truck carrying 43 passengers allegedly came at high speed and ploughed into the Nissan truck which was still in the middle of the road," he said.

Just after the accident, a Mazda bakkie with two occupants rammed onto the back of the Dyna truck.

The driver of the Mazda and 40 people from the Dyna truck were also seriously injured in the accident. They are being treated at the Middelburg Mid-med and Cosmos hospitals, Hlathi said. - Sapa
