Unicef concerned about SA's high child mortality

June 22, 2007, 08:30

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has expressed sadness and dismay that young children are among the highest numbers of reported deaths in South Africa.

This came out of a report released by Unicef that goes on to say the country's children are now dying at historically unprecedented rates since the dawn of democracy in South Africa.

Ngashi Ngongo, the Unicef's chief of health and nutrition, says Aids is the leading cause. "In South Africa there is now what is called the Child Problem Inquiry Programme which identifies the different causes and investigates all the causes of mortality in children. Except for incidents of death I think the rest that are attributed to Aids are on 60%, showing that Aids has become a leading cause of deaths in children in South Africa."
