Man killed in Johannesburg accident

Arrive Alive, SA's road safety campaign

A 3 year-old girl has been killed and 5 other people injured, two seriously, in a head-on collision

June 09, 2007, 11:00

A man was killed when he fell from a moving bakkie on the N12 near the Diepkloof interchange in Johannesburg, paramedics said today. Werner Vermaak, an ER24 spokesperson, said paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but he died at the scene at about 11pm yesterday.

Vermaak said it was believed that the bakkie driver had not noticed that he had lost one of his passengers. Meanwhile, as paramedics were busy trying to save the man, a VW Golf and an Opel Corsa collided on the same road, not far from the scene, Vermaak said.

Two people were seriously injured and two suffered minor injuries. The VW Golf driver - who suffered minor injuries - was arrested by metro police who were at the scene.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Vermaak said paramedics and metro police were lucky not to have been hurt during the collision. - Sapa
