Gun ownership becomes tricky amid new act

October 14, 2006, 18:15

The law of gun possession has become rather tricky in South Africa. Earlier this week, Special Assignment revealed that guns are being hired out to commit crimes.

If a person's gun is stolen as a result of negligence and used to commit a crime, the person can be charged. If anyone is caught in possession of a gun which has been linked to a crime, police have to prove that that person, who has the gun, was at the crime scene.

The new act states that it is illegal to lend a gun to anyone, and if you hire out a gun, you are committing a serious offence. A person, who hires a gun can be charged as an accomplice to the crimes committed with the gun.
