Sebokeng protestors clash with police

October 11, 2006, 17:00

Police have clashed with Sebokeng residents who've blocked the Golden Highway, south of Johannesburg, in a service delivery protest. Youths in Boitumelo township have pelted the police with stones and police are using stun grenades to disperse them.

The residents accuse their local municipality, Emfuleni in the Vaal Triangle, of failing to provide them with electricity, water and proper toilets.

They are now demanding to voice their concerns to a higher authority. They say they will not disperse until Dikeledi Tsotetsi, the Emfuleni mayor, has addressed them.

This follows several similar protests by Orange Farm residents.
