Fashion industry not setting dangerous standards

September 29, 2006, 09:15

Linda Bruchhausen, the manager of Boss models, has rejected suggestions that the fashion industry is setting dangerous standards for thinness. Milan fashion week has been resisting calls for a ban on underweight models.

However, earlier this month Madrid and London asked models below a certain weight to stay away from its shows. Bruchhausen says perceptions of how a good model should look are beginning to change.

"I was wondering if they have not taken a leaf out of the Cape Town fashion week function because the local industry has taken this issue very seriously and have definitely turned away models, who appear too thin. I think it is a big step forward, and I really do wish that the shows in Milan, Paris and London would follow suit because there is enormous pressure on the models to be thin, and they tend to follow very unhealthy methods to be that thin," Bruchhausen said.
