A large group of people has gathered at Kaizergracht in Cape Town ahead of a march to Parliament under the auspices of the Marriage Alliance of South Africa. Costa Mitchell, the alliance spokesperson, says they want to highlight their concerns about the intended legislation on same sex marriages.
The Constitutional Court has already given the green light for legal protection of same sex marriages to be similar to heterosexual marriages. Mitchell says they will hand a memorandum to Patrick Chauke, the chairperson of the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee, at Parliament.
Anglican Church against same sex unions
Meanwhile, Njongonkulu Ndungane, the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, says same sex marriages will never be endorsed and accepted within the Anglican Church in Southern Africa.
He says while he cannot condone homosexuality, gays cannot be thrown out of church structures. Ndungane claims priests who, as he puts it, have homosexual tendencies can only be accommodated if they pledge celibacy.
