Peter Gastro, the director of the Institute for Security Studies, says improved vigilance by the police and their co-operation with Interpol is beginning to yield successes in their efforts to combat drug trafficking.
There have been two large drug busts at Johannesburg International Airport in the past two days with R100 million worth of drugs being seized. Gastro says the police have the capacity to win the fight against drug traffickers.
"The fact that this shipment was intercepted suggests that there are increased checks at the airports and border posts in South Africa but most of all there may have been better international co-operation South African police services and law enforcement agencies in other countries.
Without international co-operation, it is becoming very difficult to deal with these sophisticated international groups," he said.
