Twenty-one schools from the greater Cape Town area will from today join 4 000 other schools around the world to fly the Green Flag.
The flag symbolises that the schools have undertaken successful environmental projects as part of the International Federation for Environmental Education programme. Andy Gubb of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa, an affiliate of the International Feberation, says the schools have been involved in water conservation, air pollution control, soil conservation and recycling projects.
Learners at Kannemeyer Primary in Grassy Park, on the Cape Flats, are one of the schools who have been lauded for their project. Thurayya Benjamin, the head girl at Kannemeyer Primary, says: “I am happy because we are the best school, in future I would like to help with the environment and I would like to congratulate all the other environment schools projects because I think they have done a good job and encourage other schools to take part.”
