Duma ka Nkosi, the mayor of the Ekurhuleni metro council, says the process of renaming Johannesburg International Airport to OR Tambo International is at an advanced stage.
Ka Nkosi says a formal request has already been submitted to both the departments of transport and arts and culture to effect the name change.
The Metro says naming the airport after the late ANC stalwart has political and historic significance. Ka Nkosi says the use of resources in pursuit of the name change does not necessarily affect service delivery.
He says public opinion was gauged on the matter last month.
