The renaming controversy in KwaZulu-Natal is back in the spotlight, after the renaming of a school after an MK bomber failed to go ahead in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban.
Andrew Zondo was hanged for bombing the Sanlam shopping complex in the area 23 years ago. Five people were killed and scores wounded. There's already a dispute over the proposed renaming of Amanzimtoti's main road, Kingsway, after Zondo.
The Lovu primary school in the town was due to be renamed after Zondo yesterday. However, KZN Education MEC Ina Cronje only went ahead with the opening of a computer laboratory, after consulting with local leaders.
Lovu Primary School principal Mzwandile Sibiya said earlier that a crèche at the school was to be named after a victim of the bombing, Willem van Wyk, in what he called a reconciliatory move.
