A building at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was completely destroyed by a fire this morning. Divisional Commander Dennis Govender said the fire at the campus's auditorium building on Old Dutch Road started at 3am. "We managed to get the fire under control within 30 minutes and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings," he said.
Govender said the building which was used to store old furniture was completely gutted. No injuries were reported but police and fire officials suspect that someone had set the building alight. "The cause of the fire was a direct burning," said Govender.
Police are investigating a case of arson.
University spokeswoman Nomondi Mbadi was not immediately available for comment. - Sapa
