A Human Rights Commission report and recommendations on school violence have been widely welcomed. The report mentions bullying as possibly one of the most common and well known manifestations of violence on the school ground.
For affected children, school has become a place they fear. In the absence of concrete statistics, various organisations are researching the extent of school violence. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) did a similar study in Gauteng last year.
University of Johannesburg Proffessor Jace Pillay says: "There's a clear indication that the issue of violence is escalating, at a tremendous level, the kind of ways in which it manifests itself is becoming even more dangerous and more intense as well."
