The trouble-torn North West University in Mafikeng, has served 11 students with suspension letters. They are part of a movement which protested against the decision by management to hike fees by 13%.
The institution has been closed following violent protests by students two weeks ago. Provincial chairperson of the South African Students Congress, Mosimanegape Moleme, says allegations by the university management are not true.
"We are going to defend all students who are suspended. We will then engage with the university management, if they are willing to engage with us on this matter so that we resolve all the problems.
He says the problem can't be resolved by suspension. They will have then to suspend all students because quite a number of students are raising the very same grievances.
University spokesperson Lester Mpolokeng says the students contravened the code of conduct and added that the students will not be allowed on the campus until all investigations are completed.
