The Department of Education has handed out awards to 45 schools across South Africa for excellence in education following last year's matric exams.

The 7th annual Schools Awards was held at a ceremony in Pretoria last night. Prizes of over R2 million in four categories were awarded to the schools. Education Minister Naledi Pandor was on hand to hand out the prizes.

Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria had the largest number of higher grade maths passes, while Makgetse High School in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, showed the most outstanding improvement over the last three years.
