SA schools under the spotlight
|
March 14, 2008, 10:00
The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) secretary-general, Thulas Nxesi, has slammed suggestions that more research needs to be done to address the rising levels of violence at South African schools this morning. Nxesi was speaking during the After 8 debate on SAFM.
Nxesi was responding to recommendations contained in a South African Human Rights Commission's (SAHRC) report. He says the issues addressed in the report are very clear and immediate action is needed from the Department of Education.
On Wednesday the SAHRC released a report on school-based violence which revealed shocking findings about the state of South African schools. The report found that school children are resorting to more aggressive methods to deal with conflict using more knives, weapons and handguns in fights.
Games emulating physical and sexual violence are believed to be played on South African school grounds.
