SRC vows to continue KZN student protest
|
March 10, 2008, 11:15
Management at Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology are expected to meet with the academic board today to discuss critical issues that led to the institution's closure last week.
The university's spokesperson Sanele Zondi says there will be no student representation at the meeting. "The management and executive committee of the academic board would meet at around 10am to discuss all the issues.
"All the gates to the premises have been locked and no one will be allowed on the campus today."
Students not invited to the meeting
Students Representative Council (SRC) president Brian Masondo confirmed that they were not invited for the meeting. "But we will continue to protest later today until our demands are met."
Students were told on Friday that registration was cancelled and that those living in residence were also told to leave the premises. This came after three days of protests which resulted in the arrests of at least 125 people. Zondi also disputed media reports that the SRC were expelled from the institution. "No decision has been taken to expel any particular group of students.
"The registration of all students have been cancelled," said Zondi.
Police spokesperson Khephu Ndlovu said there had been no incidents of violence reported today. - Sapa
