UFS obtains second interdict to halt protests

UFS students will be banned from picketing or protesting on campus

March 07, 2008, 07:00

The University of the Free State (UFS) has obtained a new court interdict to maintain calm on its main and Vista campuses in Bloemfontein. The interdict follows plans by a number of outside organisations to hold mass demonstrations on these campuses in the coming weeks. The main campus continues to see sporadic incidents of disruption and intimidation.

Tensions were sparked by the release last week of a 'racist' video which featured black university employees on their knees eating food which had purportedly been urinated on by a white student.

The university management argues that mass protests on campus will worsen the already tense situation. The latest interdict follows a previous one obtained by the University 15 days ago. It bans demonstrating, picketing, meetings, or protest marches on any campuses of the university.
