The (SARB) Reserve Bank is to donate R6 million over the next four years to restore under-resourced schools which have historical significance. The schools fall under the Historic Schools Restoration Project (HSRP).
The HSRP says its mission is to recapture the previous legacy of African education excellence which played an important part in the lives of many leaders.
Head of the project, former Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane and the board's chairperson, Constitutional Court Judge Thembile Skweyiya, will receive the funds from Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni in Pretoria today. They say they want to prepare for a new generation of aspirational, values-based young people, able to meet the demands of their communities and their country.
The Cape Town-based HSRP was already conducting an in-depth audit of six pilot schools.
