ANC wants racist video students expelled

The ANC has called for the students who were involved in the production of the controversial video to be expelled from the University of the Free State (UFS).

Spokesperson for the ANC in the Free State, Qondile Khedama, says it is shocking to learn that such racist incidents still take place 14 years into the new democratic dispensation. He says everybody in South Africa should accept integration.

Freedom Front Plus youth leader in the Free State, Jan van Niekerk, has accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of exploiting the situation on the Bloemfontein campus of the UFS for political gain.

The university has made headlines after a video surfaced showing students from the President Reitz hostel preparing food for five workers, after it had allegedly been urinated in.

Transformation
Van Niekerk says the DA is intent on placing all the blame on the Freedom Front Plus, but does not condemn actions by the South African Students Congress (Sasco). He has appealed to everyone on campus to put the unpleasant event of the past few days behind them.

Meanwhile the Department of Education Director-General, Duncan Hindle, says they will do everything in its power to assist the Bloemfontein campus to ensure that transformation moves ahead.

Hindle is visiting student bodies as well as the management at the university. He says the department will even help with the necessary infrastructure to fast track transformation.
